This is a coating used to fill in narrow grooves in a tooth that cannot be adequately cleaned by brushing. In some cases, the tooth structure has fine grooves or pits which accumulate plaque, not because the person doesn't brush, but because the grooves and pits are too narrow to allow even one bristle into them. These will develop cavities over time, so Dr. Green's assistants will brush on a coating that seals the grooves and pits, making it possible to brush off all the plaque and keep your teeth healthy. No anesthetic is needed while placing sealants. Sealants are very effective in preventing cavities on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, but will not prevent cavities from developing between the teeth and at the gumline. Over time sealants tend to wear, but can be replaced easily.
